Description
Orval Abbey is a Cistercian monastery founded in 1132 in the Gaume region of Belgium and is located in Villers-devant-Orval. The abbey is well known for its history and spiritual life but also for its local production of the Trappist beer Orval and a specific cheese. The name "Orval" means "Valley of Gold". Mathilde gave the land to the monks after she prayed for the return of a lost wedding ring and a trout rose from a spring with the ring in its mouth. This resulted in the building of the Abbey and the name of the area as the Valley of Gold.
